Like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic!
Variations on this phrase have come into common usage over the last 40 years or so, all of them suggesting that a person, team or company had taken panicky, and completely useless, action in an emergency situation.
This saying came to mind recently when an actual deckchair from that ill-fated liner came up for auction. This single item is considered a truly rare collectible, as only a few are still in existence. It’s reported that about half a dozen were originally picked up by one of the rescue vessels in the area. It raised an astonishing $115,000 (or about £75,000). Not bad for a chair that is so fragile it would collapse if you actually tried to sit on it!
The phrase itself quite amuses our team here at Anywhere Deck Chairs, as it’s actually the exact opposite of what we’re about. Working with many companies, we provide beautiful, traditional deck chairs for hire for a wide range of business and social events, festivals, weddings and other parties.
These provide a flexible and fun way to ensure that everyone at an event can find a seat, and enjoy the experience of relaxing in a way that has been part of our life for over 150 years. All this for a lot less than you’d pay at auction – apparently!
